Junior Pennants 2023 Match 2 V Cronulla at NSW GC

Junior pennants went next door to NSW Golf Club playing Cronulla GC on
what was a gorgeous day! It turned out to be another nail biter with the
result coming down to the number 1 match again with Ian Kim once again
prevailing to take his game and get another 3-3 draw. Once again our
team had to give a lot of shots to their feisty opponents but stuck to
the task and gave each match all they had so as always we can be well
proud of the way the boys and girls represented our great club.

Team this week with Jim Byrnes Manager, Ian Kim, Seb Mok, Cooper Grant,
Max Jennings, Maddie Mok, Alfie Frain, Ryan Bailey and John Serhan
(Coach).

Maddie and Seb were first out with Maddie receiving a walk over our own
Ryan Bailey stepped up with borrowed clubs to give Maddie a game which
she promptly won. Great practice for Maddie and Ryan on a new and
challenging golf course. Both played well but with Maddie being a little
straighter and more consistent on the day! Seb Mok playing a woman on
the day had to give up several shots plus par difference which made it
even more challenging! Seb started strong being 2up thru 9 but then
ended up needing a magnificent 4 iron from 190m on the 18^(th) for his
3^(rd) to just 15 feet to win the hole and his match. Some great driving
being the key on the day!

Second group out was Max Jennings and Alfie Frain who also had to give
lots of shots. Max just back from Japan was a little rusty but fought
hard all day. His opening bunker shot on the 1^(st) was amazing, going
to just 2 feet! He would turn 3 down but got back into the game until an
error in his line on the blind second shot on 15 brought him unstuck
eventually going down 3/2. Alfie also just back from Europe and turning
15 that day found the going a little tough being a little wayward. His 4
irons off the tee were awesome and his up and down on the 12^(th) were
highlights! Got many good lessons from playing and will work hard
towards his next match after going down 4/3.

Last group out were our number 1 and 2 in Cooper Grant and Ian Kim and
of course both giving shots away. Cooper really striking the ball
magnificently the first 9 turned one up and looked very strong. But a
spirited fight back from his opponent saw the match slip away 3/2.
Commitment to the shot at hand being his major issue but I am sure Coops
will continue to work hard and is swinging the club the best I have seen
so watch this space! Ian had another strong match yet again although
only giving 3 shots was much nicer than the 8 the week before! A 6 iron
on the second to 10 feet for birdie was a nice start and then nuking a
drive over the par 5, 5^(th) to just 135m out was very satisfying! A par
on 17 was enough to secure a 3/1 win to again get a half for the team.
Has not won a toss yet but more importantly keeps winning clutch matches
but will be rested next week to work on his coin tossing!

One hole one shot!!!! Lets go!!!

Matchplay has its origins from long ago in Scotland and I gave the kids
this quote as a bit of fun history!!

Quote from “The Art of Golf” published in 1887!! By Sir W.G.Simpson,
Captain of the Honourable Company of Edinburg Golfers… He says…

*“Now golf is a game in which each player has a small hard ball of his
own, which he strikes with a stick whilst it is still, with the
intention of putting it into a hole. Abstractly he wishes to do this
with as few blows as possible, **concretely in fewer than his
opponent*.”
